ONE OF MY FAVORITE CENTRAL MEDELLIN PLACES

These photos are of one of my favorite places in central Medellin: Plazuela San Ignacio....As you can see, it's very active and is an excellent place for people-watching. I go here frequently to have a coffee and sit on the bench and read a book, to watch life. A wonderful side benefit is that I often meet some wonderful people.

Yesterday, for example, a young guy came along and sat down on my bench. He was having an animated conversation with another guy when suddenly he broke out into an a capella song that sounded like some sort of Colombian ranchera music. It was quite nice.

I also saw a group of about 8 little girls, ranging in age from about 8-12 years of age. They were having a grand time as they walked along with a nun who appeared to be no more than 20 years old herself. It was delightful to see how much they all loved each other. Each of the little girls was vying for the nun's attention as they touched her and competed to see who would hold her hands or lock their arms with her.

God, I am crazy for bamboo. Confucius said "We can live without meat but without bamboo, we will die." I know what he meant.

The Petanque gang in Austin, Texas

My Petanque buddies at the French Legation in Austin, Texas, in April, 2009. The two guys on the right, Arsene and Amid, won the First Annual HOT (Heart of Texas) championship on May 3.

A TRIP TO SANTA FE DE ANTIOQUIA

We went to a beautiful finca this weekend near Santa Fe de Antioquia, a beautiful colonial town about 75 minutes northwest of Medellin. The grounds were beautiful, with a great swimming pool, the other guests were wonderful, and the food was exquisite.

As near as I can tell, the finca weekend escape is one of the Colombian's favorite activities. With only two under my belt, I can easily understand why....it's like a two-day holiday, and you can always find a great one to rent, with your girlfriend, or more in keeping with the Colombian way, with you friends.

Of course, the ideal is to have a friend or family that invites you along to theirs....with a special nod of thanks to Jaime.
