EL DIA EN EL CENTRO DE MEDELLIN

Claudia and I went to San Antonio in central Medellin to the flower market and surrounding area. Found some great arepas made with chocolo, a different sort of corn....YUM!

Took these great shots from the neighborhood. A grand day.

CARTAGENA, COLOMBIA

I spent four great days in Cartagena, from 12-16 December to meet my friend, Claudia, who lives in Manizales, Colombia.

We rented an apartment in Boca Grande, 5 minutes from the beaches. Cartagena is pretty heavily touristed but its walled city is fantastic. We spent wonderful time walking, eating, and window-shopping in this great area. I especially recommend spending time eating and people-watching in Plaza Santo Domingo.

Also, be sure to go to Playa Blanca. It´s about a 30-minute boat ride from Cartagena and has incredible beaches.

I love Colombia and hope to move there sometime in 2009, probably to Medellin......

Vive Colombia!

DIA DE PATRIAS Monday, 3 November, 2008

Ah, it's a grand day for Panama. November is a month filled with holidays, both for the dead (yesterday) as well as for the living.

Today and tomorrow, the city is filled with parades that go on for hours, mostly marching bands and folkloric dancers.

I caught this action today in El Cangrejo, on Via Espana, one of Panama City's main thoroughfares. Trying to cross Via Espana on any other day is a risky act: you might be killed by a 'diablo rojo' the converted US school buses that are the main form of transport for most people. If they miss you, you're only slightly less likely to be maimed or claimed by SUV drivers or taxis. So, all in all, it was a bit of a relaxing day seeing only marchers on the street.

A VISIT TO TRINITY HILLS VALLEY DEVELOPMENT

Three of my co-workers, Kent, Olga, and Julia, and I rode out to Trinity Hills Valley, a beautiful 48-acre development, that we are selling. We went out with the owner of the area, Abdiel Basto.

Trinity is located about 45 minutes from Panama City, and about 10 minutes off the Pan American Highway and within 20 minutes of great Pacific beaches.

The first pictures show our stop for breakfast on a small roadside cafe. The rest of the pix show the project from various points. It's a breathtaking area and adjoins Campana National Park, one of Panama's nicest national parks.

A lot and house here runs from $155,000 to $285,000.

WHAT A GREAT TIME-WASTING TOOL

OK, it's no secret I spend far too much time on the internet. However, I occasionally run across things that justify spending so much time there.

Wordle is one of them. It's a sweet little java application that lets you either enter text in a freeform fashion, the URL of any site capable of RSS feed, or any Delicious page. For those of you who may be unfamiliar with Delicious, it's a web-based bookmarking site.

The program then takes the words from any of those locations and forms a word cloud based on the frequency of the words on the site.

For instance, if your source contained the words MARY, MARY, QUITE CONTRARY, the resultant image generated by Wordle would present MARY only once but it would be twice as large as the words QUITE and CONTRARY.

In addition, you may choose from about 12 fonts, an immense color pallette, in additon to custom ones you may create, and several layout options. All in all, a great fun little for us frustrated artists.

And, the icing on the cake is that you may save your artwork to the site's gallery for the world to admire.

The entry you see here is a snapshot of the tag words from my Delicious site. I cut and pasted it from my Windows paint program. The images on Wordle's site are much crisper.

ME, GEORGE, AND RUMI

Well, 30 September is both my birthday and Rumi's, as well as one of my dearest old friends, George Prudhon. George was born in 1946; I was born in 1947, and old Rumi was born in 1240. I am embedding a recording of my reciting one of my favorite poems from him.

I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoy reciting it.

A PRAYER OF LIBERATION

If I had a prayer it would be this: "God, spare me from the desire for love, approval, or appreciation, Amen". Byron Katie
